#JanSportjams: Damien Jurado

Damien Jurado Sounds like: A vintage soundtrack to your next desert road trip.

Damien Jurado kicked off the year right by releasing what is most definitely our favorite record thus far in a very young 2014. “Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son”, Jurado’s 11th studio album and third in a series of Richard Swift produced records, continues to build on Jurado’s movement towards sprawling psychedelic art-folk concept albums.

Pitchfork does a great job of diving into some of the interesting lyrical content in their recent Read More >

#jansportjams: Gardens & Villa

January 27, 2014   |   Music, News, Uncategorized   |   0 Comments
Gardens & Villa Sounds Like:  A synth-powered new wave soundtrack to your late night 80′s themed hang.

Our favorite Santa Barbara, CA five piece is back with Dunes, their sophomore follow up to 2011′s near perfect self titled debut. Rather than hanging in the Southern California, the band traveled to frosty Michigan to work with producer Tim Goldsworthy on a collection of songs that pushes the band further into 80′s new wave territory. Pulsing synths, falsetto vocals, and gated snare back beats create a sound stylistically [...] Read More >

#jansportjams: Doncat

January 20, 2014   |   Music, News   |   0 Comments
Doncat Sounds Like: Rock and Roll in the finest sense. Think George Harrison with a healthy dose of Crazy Horse bombast. The ideal listening environment for Doncat would be in a car, preferably a convertible, cruising along cliff side curves on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Every now and them we’re going to bring you some hyper-local up-and-comers; the un-signed, sometimes unnoticed artists that are the heart and soul of “indie” music. This week we’re bringing you SF’s Doncat (AKA Duncan “Doncat” Neilsen.) Neilsen took the [...] Read More >

With the 6th annual JanSport Battle of the Bands kicking off this coming Tuesday, January 21st, we thought we should take a moment to catch up with last year’s winner: Philadelphia’s Cold Fronts.

The guys have definitely had an incredible year, and front man Craig Almquist filled us in on some of the details, along with some SXSW tips for bands making the trip for the first time:

JS: We’ve seen lots of big news from Cold Fronts this year. What have you guys been up to [...] Read More >

#Jansportjams: Solids

January 13, 2014   |   Music, News   |   0 Comments
Solids Sounds like: Japandroids, but louder and dirtier. A bit of Dinosaur Jr. with a dose of Fugazi. A more rough and tumble Foo Fighters.

This week’s #jansportjams was love at first listen. We came across the first single from this Montreal duo’s upcoming LP, “Traces” a few months ago and couldn’t help turning the volume up. Like, way up.

Like other material from the band, their latest single, “Haze Away”, draws heavily from undeniably 90′s alt/indie rock influences like Sonic Youth, Superchunk, and Dinosaur Jr. The [...] Read More >
