Every month, JanSport Unzipped highlights a story from one of our favorite organizations Big City Mountaineers (BCM), who transforms the lives of under-served urban youth through wilderness mentoring expeditions that instill critical life skills.

Thirteen year-old Sierra lives in an area where gangs, dropping out of high school and crime are the norm for students her age.

This summer, Sierra pushed past these distractions and changed her life.

“Our BCM trip ended up being pretty amazing. I learned to persevere and that I can accomplish difficult things when I put my mind to it,” said Sierra. “I will take what I learned this summer and apply it to reaching my dream of attending Harvard or Yale University.”
